We use metal corner bead on all exposed outside corners, feather the compound carefully on every joint, and sand between coats to get the smoothest possible finish. For a built-in, a Level 4 or Level 5 drywall finish (the smoother end of the scale) is appropriate because the surface will typically be painted with a sheen that highlights any imperfections.

This assumes a medium-complexity unit — full wall width, standard 9-foot ceiling. Simpler TV niches can be done in 3 days. More elaborate floor-to-ceiling units with multiple recesses may run 6–7 days.
